From Our Nest aims to give children the gift of literacy

We are seeking to empower the youth in the Ozarks by giving the gift of literacy. From Our Nest wants to give back to its local community by donating at least $500 in new books to Wish I May and Sammy’s Window by the end of 2015 through its first online book drive.

In partnership with Usborne books, From Our Nest is able to take 25 percent to 50 percent of its e-drive sales and buy new books for children in our community.

“Knowledge and literacy are power, so we want to empower the children of our communities through this e-drive,” says Kandice Matteson, co-owner of From Our Nest Publications.

“With the staggering statistics about poverty and lack of preparedness for school in our local communities exposed by the Springfield News-Leader’s Every Child series, we can’t just sit back and not do our part as a local publication,” Matteson says.“We are in the business of connecting parents to local resources through the written word, so doing a book drive to benefit the children and young adults in our community just makes sense.”

Lindberg, the daughter of an elementary school teacher, stresses the importance that reading can have in these children’s lives.

“Reading is one of the most important fundamental skills children must master to succeed in school, work and life. We want to help the children in our area do just that and acquire the many benefits that reading offers, including: increased vocabulary, mental stimulation, memory improvement, stress reduction and stronger analytical thinking and writing skills,” says Stephanie Lindberg, co-owner and creative director for From Our Nest Publications.

Both alumnae from Missouri State University and mothers themselves, Lindberg and Matteson feel privileged to be parts of the community they serve.

“The families in the greater Springfield community are so wonderful and deserving, and I think we can all agree that every child deserves a book to call his or her own,” Matteson says.
